Breakdown while towing

So on out way out west my truck broke down(water pump failed causing a lot of other damage when it did). Luckly we had already dropped the fifth wheel off at the park and we're on the way to get some groceries. It could have been much worse since my wife was driving on the highway on the way there and I lost power brakes and steering. I was able to get into a parking lot but I couldn't imagine the same thing happening while towing on the highway.

Anyway my question relates to what to do if you break down while towing. I have AAA and have added the RV option. We're full time so obviously however I wouldn't want the whole rig to go to the shop. I'd want the truck at the shop and the fifth wheel at a park somewhere close by.

How have you handled this in the past or plan to handle this in the future?

  • I had AAA on my truck when I started traveling again five years ago. I compared AAA's RV service with Good Sam's and Good Sam's coverage was much better. I switched to Good Sam for both my truck and RV. I used the coverage once when I had a blowout. I paid for two new tires but nothing out of pocket for the road service. The service truck had to come about 65 miles to my location.
  • You certainly should check with AAA or whatever carrier you have to see what their specific policies are. Our truck broke down, towing, on Highway 12 Cape Hatteras NC 5 miles from the campground. After a lot of calls while sitting on the side of the road we found out that AAA did not have a vendor in the area who could handle our rig. We had to call a tow service who towed both vehicles to the campground and then the next morning towed the truck to the Ford dealer. We had to pay out of pocket but then we were reimbursed by AAA. It was a hassle but it turned out to be a great week.

    Enjoy the road. We do.

  • We've had Coachnet for three years and used it twice. Didn't have to be towed anywhere, but it's in our plan as well as a whole lot of other things. AAA may be great for cars, but I'd really want to read the fine print (being told something over the phone isn't binding).

You might call AAA an ask what their policy is BEFORE you need to use the service.

And while they're at it, they should ask if they will receive that coverage throughout the US.
  • You might call AAA an ask what their policy is BEFORE you need to use the service. The one time I broke down, Good Sam towed my truck to the dealership for repair, and my FW to an RV park while we waited.
