broken springs

I discovered a broken spring on my fiver about 5 years ago. Considered it an anomaly and replaced it. This summer I discovered another spring broken while on the road in Utah. Stopped at a Flying J in Scipio to get it replaced and found two were broken, one on each side. The second probably happened on the crappy section of IH-15 south out of Salt Lake while I was looking for a repair shop.

Anyway, getting to the point I had all 4 replaced with heavier 5 leaf springs vs 4 leaf that came on it. Sunnybrook made excellent trailers in that time frame but like all manufacturers they used only the minimum required. The OEM tires were D rated (just barely enough) and I upgraded to E. I am sure the springs were adequate, but probably just adequate. Something to consider if one is having suspension work done. FWIW
  • I had EMCO brand, made in USA springs on a new trailer. They really looked nice with well formed eyes in each end. One had the locator off center, one sagged and one broke all within the first three years. I replaced with springs from Redneck Trailer Supply, they appeared more crudely made, but they have been working ever since. I believe it is all about the steel quality and heat treating and there is no way to tell what you are buying.
  • Agree with replacing all four. My original springs were rated 3,000 lbs; weignt on each wheel about 2,500 lbs. After breaking one spring, I replaced all with 4,000 lb springs. That was nine years ago and there have been no spring problem since the replacement.

If one goes I would always recommend replacing the full set.
Mine were sagging after a decade and were replaced with a higher weight rating. Has never ridden better.

I agree.... if I had 1 that went, ALL would be gone at the same time!
Not worried about that now, the Morryde IS is an BEAST !

  • If a person has time to order what they want there are US Made springs available.
