Buying a used 5th wheel

Thinking about buying a 31 foot Cougar 313RU. 2014. Has anyone heard of a issues with this camper. It's really clean and they are asking $32,500. Sounds like a great deal.

The old story goes, if the seller is happy and the buyer is happy then it was a good deal :)

Never mind the people who tell you the brand your looking at is ****, you can read all over these reflectors OP's stating their brand is better than what your looking at. This is just BS, they all at one time or another have had their problems just some worse than others.

Any of these trailer are like boats, big holes were you throw money into, it's called upkeep :)

Yeah, your right about the "big holes" thing but the bottom line is that some manufacturers look after their customers better than others,, sometimes a lot better than others which we've experienced first-hand with our CC Daydreamer! I wish I had known about this forum and the countless combined years of experience it has to offer before I bought my previous Fleetwood P.O.S. motor coach that made me nutz with their lousy quality, coulda' saved a small fortune!

  • I have a friend who owns a cougar and I wouldn't buy anything keystone, absolutely lousy after-the-sale customer service. The graphics went to **** within a few years, look on this forum about other keystone problems like the poor gut with his big horn. You should give Cedar Creek Cardinal/silverback a good look, their after-the-sale service is the best in the industry which goes a long way to cost of ownership!!!

  • do a nationwide search and maybe you can find some for comparison pricing.

What i always did when selling.
  • I think 32k is really high for that year and model. If its by owner they may have been taken to the cleaners when they bought it.
  • If you are not trading, you are in a position to make whatever offer you want. If trading, only the difference matters. All brands/makes have some type of issues. The Keystone Cougar is a popular FW, so they must at least be a good trailer for the cost.

When I see a private seller asking just over a round number, such as 32,500, I always figure they are hoping to get the round number 30,000. A dealer will set a high price, so they can make you feel better, allowing more for your trade. On a no-trade they will consider any offer, and likely don't need to get near what they are asking.

  • A mainstream brand RV like a Keystone should be worth about 50% of MSRP when it's 3-4 years old. It should have sold when new for about 70% MSRP. Dealers love to screw people on both ends... don't let them :)
  • I don't see that specific model in nada. There is a 2014 313RLI, if that's what you are looking at. The price you quoted is about 10k over book for the RLI model, but it's worth whatever you are willing to pay for it.
