Buying New

We’ve always bought used so I have a questions about negotiations on a new rig. I’ve read about others getting extras thrown in on a deal or getting dealers to replace "China bombs". When do you ask for these? After deal is where you want it or during negotiations? I’ve seen a new 2017 rig I like but it doesn’t ha e slide toppers on it which we would like to have is one reason I’m asking. Is this even something they might consider?

(And, yes, we understand the hit one takes on buying new.. the main reason we’ve bought used in the past.)

  • We bought our 2017 trailer for 30% off MSRP, they included slide toppers an changed out the pin box an gave us $1000 to pick other options. Once at the dealer they gave us another $300 to pick stuff out of their RV store ...

I had to get up twice an walk away when Negotiating an one time almost made to the another dealer at the RV show before the salesman came running up an an said if I give you want you want will we have a deal, I said put it writing ...

  • Negotiate like your life depended on it to the lowest price you can possibly get. Then tell the dealer to "throw in the slide topper installed and you got a deal".
  • What brand of RV?
If it's anything from Northwood, skip the slide toppers and install them yourself after delivery.
The toppers they use are junk.
  • Search your model on RV Trader or RVT to see what it can be had for elsewhere. Keep in mind there is a lot of regional price change due to transport cost (they are generally cheaper closer to the midwest where many/most are made). Decide how far you're willing to travel to pick up and/or if you want to buy locally for dealer support.

If nothing else, the low prices from elsewhere makes for a great negotiation tool.

A good deal is usually somewhere around 70% of MSRP. I just go for the lowest price I can get and buy the extras myself.
  • My thought on things thrown in...If the dealer/sales person throws it in, they could have come down more on the price instead, so you are still paying for it. Thrown in items are often not top quality, that you may have preferred. Don't ask will you take this much for it, but if you are ready, say I will pay this amount right now,(out the door price, no added fees) or I'm going to go look elsewhere. You can always go back, if they don't stop you, or call you.

If the dealer has a quality item you would like to purchase, after the deal is closed, you can likely purchase it at a reduced price at this time.

Put everything you want included on paper first and work from there. Be prepared to walk if the deal is not close to what you think its worth. There is profit built into everything, and the dealer needs profit to stay in business. How much you give him is up to you.

The first thing you need to know is the selling price of the rig you are interested in. NOT the MSRP or sticker price but what are these things actually selling for. The sticker MSRP on our 5th wheel was $59,000. We paid $39,000. So the MSRP is a joke. You will need to do some research to determine this. Ask other owners go on that brands forum and ask etc.

Once you have the price present an offer to the dealer and state that you want these things included in the purchase price. You may have to walk a few times but after some give and take you hopefully get your RV with the options you want at a price you are happy with.

Hope everything works out well for you and that you get your RV.

  • X2 get everything down listed including tax .make sure you knock off 20% of the msrp before you deal. you might have to walk a couple times, but every time you save a buck it goes in your pocket, the sales people LIE A LOT so be careful. have fun with your new rv, and only pay what you want.
