buying used generator online

How many of you folks purchased your used Onan or equivalent generator from an online site such as eBay or Craig's list...??

I have heard bad things about Craig's list , but just testing the waters....
  • If you think about all the transactions that occur due to items bought or sold on Craigslist, you are only hearing about a very small number of problems (theft, fraud, defective products...etc). Just like this forum you only read about a very few bad experiences with RVs if you consider how many RVs are on the road in North America.

You can do things to protect your self:
Have the generator tested in person or by a local mechanic, electrician
If local then have at least one other person go with you to look at the generator. This person will stay where they can see the transaction and be ready to step in or call the police if things go wrong.

We have bought numerous items off of craigslist for many years without any problems.

I have a friend that buys cars from all over the country. He has the seller send photos and videos plus a written description of any known problems with the vehicle. He negotiates the price based upon this information and sends the money, then arranges for a transport company to deliver the vehicle to him. I know of 8 vehicles he has bought this way with no unexpected problems.
  • I noticed eBay has refurbished Champion 3100s from a generator supply. It says refurbished and tested by the manufacturer. Also states less than 20 hours running time on any, and most with only a few hours. May have slight cosmetic damage.

I'm not sure this type of purchase would be safe, but seems more so, than buying from an online individual. I have very little use for a generator, so have been considering this type of purchase.

  • make any purchase, no matter where the source, subject to an inspection by a qualified mechanic before any money changes hands. This will be at your expense and you should chose the mechanic. It will be money well spent even if they find it not suitable. If the sellers balks or stalls, move on. Chuck
  • There's nothing wrong with Craig's List.

Were you planning on buying it unseen or untested? That I wouldn't do from any source even your neighbor or cousin.
