Just guesstimating on my hitch, but I would say mine is an inch or two in front of the rear axle. It doesn't appear to be on the centerline of the axle. I can't say whether the backing is any easier since it has been that way since I bought it.
If you came to the 5er from a TT then it may take a bit more getting used to. Just a thought.
