Companion hitch adjustments

Hey guys, I bought the Companion RVK 3600 hitch and I had a couple of questions. I have a lot of towing experience, just not with a fifth wheel/goose neck. I'm pulling with a 6.5 ft bed truck in my signature. When I picked up the trailer, I set the pin distance 4" aft of the axle just to make sure I would have plenty of clearance on the way home. I know the ideal place is directly over the axle. That said, it feels pretty steady, but occasionally feels a little like a bumper pull with strong winds. I was wondering what benefits there would be if I moved it farther forward to the cab and put it directly over the axle. I know I would lose some turning capability. So.....

Where do you guys that have this hitch have the pin located at on your truck? 2" forward of the axle, over it, 2" aft, or 4" aft. Thanks.

  • I like your signature Biscuit! Thanks for all of the replys guys. It is always nice getting other people's ideas on this site.
  • my companion is a little behind the axel on my 2013 Ram. I don't think I have anymore adjustments left to move it forward. I have towed about 11000 miles in this setting and it seems to work fine.
  • "PROPER" placement is 2" in front of center of axle. This allows for some weight to be transferred to the front tires.

    Good call on the hitch!
  • Measure distance for center of king pin to outside edge of 5vr

Then using that measurement, measure from center of hitch to back of truck cab.

Set hitch where you will not whack back window/cab....closer to over the center line of rear axle.
With the 'scoops' on Reflection nose cap you should have room
