B&W Companion to close to tool box

I just installed the turnover ball, and the companion will not go in due to hitting the tool box while raising it at a angle to get the coupler in the hole. I have a 03 short bed ram 2500 with a 18" deep tool box, and looks like my only option is to get a smaller box. Has anyone else had this problem.

I have a 20 X20 full width toolbox with a companion in a ram SB. I have the toolbox raised 2 inches on 2 pieces of aluminum square tube at both sides, this gives the option of loading plywood or studs down the center. To get the hitch in and out I cut the tool box lower rear corner at 16 inches from the front then again at 5 1/2 inches from the bottom. To cut the aluminum toolbox just use a circular saw with a very fine carbide tipped blade, works well and does not damage the blade.. I then inverted the piece I cut out and reinstalled it into the toolbox. My original plan was to weld the piece back in but it was too small because of the blade cut so I used 2 pieces of angle aluminum extrusion with construction adhesive PL Pro and pop rivets. I then painted the whole toolbox to match the truck. With the toolbox raised 2 inches it gives 7 1/2 inches of lift upward to clear the B&W.

That is a great idea, and I won't have to spend another $300.

  • Only so much room in a short bed.
Hitch needs to be properly installed so anything preventing that has to be moved or removed.
    Hitch position gets priority....
  • Some have. I have a long bed so I don't have that problem. Even though I think B$W has the best hitch on the market, I came across this and this is absolutely awesome for those of you with short bed trucks that have either rails or a B&W Turnover Ball installed. No need for a slider anymore!
