Lyle I had 100% confidence with my 18K companion also. They did send me a new base as the base flat portions of the base actually bent. They also included hard plastic furring strips to fill the void in the bed so the transferring from braking and accelerating would be transferred to the low part of the bed and to cross members and then to the frame. During that timeframe they were developing the 20K Companion that also transfers load to the low part of the bed. The 18 was engineered when beds had more strength. IMHO no fault of B&W as the beds lightened up over time.
FACT is the Ultimate will deflect the bed. Depending on how hard the forces are will depend on if there will be any permanent damage.
I have a personal friend that tows a 18K Mobile Suites with an Ultimate, he also sells them along with many other RV items. He will tell you he has bed deflection if you ask him and others do also.
