Besides all the xln't advice.....if you're "out and about" - as in AWAY from the areas of the two testing stations near you....

Take the written exam at a DMV "somewhere else" - a long way from the "convenient to the testing stations" DMVs.
When I took the Restriction (Endorsement 41) exam for 5th wheels between 10K and 15K in San Juan Capistrano (last year), they were clueless as to what it was.

The info desk gal said there was no such thing - but I had the CA dot gov printout of what I wanted.
"Oh - OK, go to window XX".

The gal at window XX handed me the test.
When I started to take the test, I realized it was for MHs over 40 ft.
Took it back, -after she scratched her head a while, and asked someone else - I got the right one.

On completion of the test, took it to a another window.
Passed with flying 100% colors (25Q "no brainer" test).

The guy there was in the process of giving me a Non Commercial Class A - and said I needed to fill out a medical cert form.

I should have kept my mouth shut - filled out a med form, and waited to find out what was behind door #3......
but I had been there for a couple of hours already - and straightened him out as to what I really wanted, and the req's and appropriate license (still a Class C).

He then discarded the Non-Com Class A license he was about to give me - and got the endorsement 41 done.

Did he know a driving test was required? Dunno.

If you take the test "somewhere else" - no harm no foul.
At best - you may get lucky.
At worst, the written is out of the way and you still need to take the driving at another DMV.

BTW - I would try that at a DMV which is *NOT* in -or near- an area with the potential of lots of commercial and/or RV folks..;)
Be polite, tell 'em what you're there for - and have your Medical form ready to go when/if asked for it.

The SJC DMV (smaller office) gets *LOTS* of overflow of retired folks
from the (larger, very busy) Laguna Hills/Laguna Woods office which is right in (20K population) *Leisure World's* back-yard.
The clientèle at either one are done with RVing (if they ever started) - and commercial license people go elsewhere (location, location, location).

wow you should of kept your mouth shut and taken the better license.... i plan on taking the written in palm desert. that dmv office opened under 2 years ago, it was nice when they first opened i sat at the counter and talked to the lady for 20 min about some other issues i had in the past just because no one was waiting. now its longer but mainly because they only have a few people working. but hey its worth a shot. maybe ill take the endorsement test first and see what happens even thought i have a pull trailer not a 5th. then i can always go back and get the right one
