Camera on Roof?

I'm in the market for backup camera and in doing some research was starting to think about second/third camera options. One of the things that is often discussed here in regards to fifth wheels is to watch HEIGHT issues.

Anyone ever mount a camera on the roof for monitoring clearance?

I guess that was my point... I understand it would be completely irrelevant for low bridges and highway travel but more for backing into a site or driving within the campground and watching for low-hanging branches trees from ripping thing off the roof. Most backup cameras are pointed DOWN but everyone says "watch for branches".

Not really a huge extra cost other than buying second camera for existing backup system. Seems you could install these cameras to look in whatever direction you want so just take second camera and install on roof..... Question is facing forward (getting to spot) or facing back (backing into spot)?

    Food for thought.

  • In 21 years towing a 5th wheel all over the U.S. only came upon one railroad bridge without a height marking. I stopped and climbed the ladder to see if I would make it.... No.

    Backed up and turned around.

  • In ten years of pulling fivers I have been in two situations where there was low clearance I didn't know about in advance. (Do your homework.) In both cases I was easily able to change route and avoid the problem.

Such a camera doesn't seem to be cost/effective.
