Five years ago, I bought a 1995 Saturn with only 12K miles on it from a relative. Two weeks later, I was rearended. My insurance company wanted to total it because CarFax reported that it had 112K miles on it. Luckily my sister inlaw had the car serviced every year at a Saturn dealer. (Yes, it had oil changes every 1 K miles). CarFax refused to correct their records because their milage information was a typo from a Secretary of State's Office and they consider the state a more reliable source than a dealer. My insurance company accepted the Saturn dealers records after their claims adjuster verified that there was no way the car could have 112K miles on it.
