Carrier AC blowing breaker

I have a Carrier 5 AC unit that is about 7 years old. It has started blowing the 20 Amp circuit breaker after it runs for maybe 5 to 10 minutes. Any suggestions on what I may want to look at before replacing the unit. Thanks
  • High amperage current draw. Bad motor is the likely cause. But high compressor pressure could also cause it. Since Carrier no longer makes RV products probably your most cost effective solution is replacement.
  • Could simply be a breaker getting weak. My rear 15K A/C tripped the breaker several times on a trip a few years ago, like yours after running a few minutes. Replaced the breaker (same amperage) and never tripped again.

A simple and inexpensive something to try.
  • Take cover off and check motor to see if you can oil the motor bearings. My old unit had oil ports.
  • Make sure all of your connections are tight in the breaker box. I had that problem and one of the connections in the breaker box was loose and when it got hot is would trip the breaker.

That's where this old retired AC tech would start looking.Check all connections from compressor to breaker.
  • Check your incoming voltage. If it is below 110 volts, your amp draw will go up. Check it with the A/C running.

Rough, If you do end up having to replace the unit, please contact me. I need the blower squirrel cage fan. It is hooked to the motor by a 1/2" shaft About 3 3/8" deep and 8 3/8 diameter. I have been searching for one as mine is cracked and has been given a temp fix. On the parts diagram it is listed #12-Blower Wheel Assy.

If anyone else has any good source to get one please let me know. I have called quite a few places that do work and they have no parts or junked units.
  • Was it cooling for the short time it ran? If not, it might be curtains for that AC. Make sure the coils are clean and the fan motor turns freely, check all elec. connections and check the amps if you can. Breakers get weak... be sure to replace it with a HACR (heating, AC and refrigeration) rated breaker. The HACR will take higher inrush amps and it is written in tiny print on the breaker. Also retired from 45 yrs hvacr service and I don't care if I ever have to fix another one again! (haha) Craig

Totally agree, especially if the A/C breaker is paired with the
main, then they both get double the heat. A $10-15 no-brainer.
