GPG52- For years we drove down to Myrtle Beach from Rochester, NY on vacation. Another fellow and his family did the same at a different time of year. We were always comparing noted to find the best route to avoid the big cities and as much traffic hassle as possible.
We finally came to the conclusion that the best route was taking 15/390 to I-81S then,
From I-81 near Strasburg, Virginia, take exit 300 on the left to merge onto I-66 E toward Front Royal/Washington
Take exit 28 to merge onto US-17 S/Winchester Rd toward Warrenton
Continue to follow US-17 S
Merge onto US-17 S via the ramp to Fredericksburg
Continue to follow US-17 S
Merge onto I-95 S via the ramp to Richmond
It works for us by car or pulling our previously owned 38' Fiver. Some two lane roads but easily manageable and definitely Virginia scenic.
You wouldn't have to come East to hit 390S of course but the chute from I-81 to I-95 is well tested.
