This was our first time camping for new year after owning the trailer for 5 years. As usual it was just us heading out. Got a last minute text from our friends up in San fransico saying they were going to join us. They have a TT 5th wheel so they bring two trucks, his wife tows the flat bed with the Polaris and Kawasaki mule that the kids love to drive. They once tipped over.Camp all setup it was great weather partly cloudy with some sun - rain on New Year's Eve but we enjoyed it. We Layered up and had a ton of wood and kept the fire going for 4 days. Sunset on our way back from randsburg. Didn't get Any pics of our visit. Stock pic I pulled from the www but the girls loved this place. My youngest daughter loves antique shops. They got $3 grab bags with a bunch of cool surprises.Finally made it to the pinnacles in the RZR. Thanks to MPoulsen for getting my pinion nut fixed. When he took it Apart it was hand tight so it was a matter of time before my rear end blew out.The best we could do for our New Years 2017 pic. I really wanted to get to inscription canyon but owls head GPS web site is under construction plus my Garmin is not capable to download the ohv maps, go figure. Going to get a new GPS soon so we can navigate the DEZ. We navigated to Randsburg winging it off the friends of jawbone map. I have converted a few of the Owlshead areas of tracks to actual maps for my Garmin. They are transparent maps. I typically display both my "road/highway" and owlshead map on the same time on my Garmin. Most of the tracks are good, some you can no longer ride on, there are some new trails that are not on owlshead. It is not routable. I can send you my map owls head map of the area and you can try to upload it to your Garmin.You can also download an app for your Smart Phone. Purchase the online Friends of Jawbone map that integrates with the App. You end up with a GPS using the Friends of Jawbone map. It works pretty well, not great, but pretty well - depending on how good the GPS is in your Smart Phone.

New Year's Eve - it was dead out there. One toy hauler setup near the restroom and a guy with ford ranger and tent setup In the bowl area and us.

I owned a 176, then a 276C. I think I had the 276 for a good 8 years or more.

I loved that form factor and the menu structure, and the buttons.

I sold the 276c when the screen started going dim. I bought a 478 to replace it.

All 3 of the above GPS units I bought on Ebay as barely used unit and saved a ton of money vs buying new at a store.

Once you use that style GPS at the level I used it, as well as a lot of motorcyclists/OHV enthusiasts, everything else in a standalone GPS unit is inferior. The Montana is pretty decent, but the touch screen and menu structure takes a while to adapt to form old school "buttons"

Hey eDUBz, glad you had good time and the RZR worked well for you. Hopefully we can get together and go to Charlie Place before it gets to hot. I haven't been there yet, we can invite George to come along and some of my other friends that have RZR's and you can be the tour guide!!! Just waiting for our Grand Child to be born,they say anytime now. So in the mean time I work on the RZR and trailer doing things on both of them while I am grounded. Lol

I'll try the kids phone when we go
to calico. I really Need to upgrade but I like this phone. I usually take wife's old phone when she upgrades. I'll watch CL to for a Garmin.

I have a 6, works well. My 5 did not do well with the Avenza app. Have the kids do the navigating with their 7+

I don't think Drivesmart has Tracking or the ability to upload other tracks/maps/routes.

Depending on the Smart Phone. Might try turning off Cell Data, so that it does not use Cell Tower Triangulation, but instead uses the built in GPS. Might take 10 or 15 minutes to find satellites but once it does, it should work without Cell coverage.

New Garmin. I really like the looks of the GPSMAP 276Cx, however the $$$$. I use a Garmin Montana. Works for me, but although at the time I bought it, it was a large screen, it's really not that large. Maybe if you could find a used Montana, it might make sense.

I just went to the Owlshead site. Looks like they have a new area called route files. Not sure if they are GPX tracks or actual maps. I'll have to download and play with them. If maps, that will be a lot easier than what I'm doing, except I add a bunch of tracks to my map that are not on the Owlshead (mostly in Cal City, and the open riding areas where the Owlshead has no tracks).
