Check Your Leaf Springs & U Bolt System

Have a 2016 Jayco 40' 5th wheel. Returning home a couple days ago and happen to notice the 5th wheel wasn't tracking straight. Pulled into lot and found the driver side leaf spring pin had sheared on was gone. Lost the bottom leaf of spring and U bolts were loose and the axle had slid back about 7 inches. Picture driver side had about 8 inches between tires and passenger side had about 2 inches. Tire were way out of alignment. Make sure u bolts are tight and spring pin is in place.
  • Seems people are responding to two different members. Hamnet, the OP has the Jayco; 2oldman posted a picture (sans any description).
  • Those did not rust out they wore out! You need to get a wet bolt, heavy duty spring shackle kit like this.
I would replace all of them if I were you.

  • The good news is you can use HD shackles that are more than twice as thick and in my own case, dont seem to ever wear.
  • Too early for lack of maintenance. This would seem to be poor assembly.
Good to hear no one is hurt and no extra damage.

Great time to upgrade the suspension ;)
  • Doesn't Jayco build their own frames and suspension parts or is it just their frames? We've seen a bunch of these on GD trailers using Lippert frames and suspension.

Just out of curiosity, what kind of condition is the underside of your camper? Mostly wondering if rust was a culprit?

Not likely with a Cali, 5er. Most likely with a 2016, never torqued correctly at the factory!

I would say torque, my son just purchased a new triple axle toy hauler. When we were checking it over I found two shackle bolts that were without nuts one was almost out the other about halfway out. Its surprising it made it from the factory that way. To say the least he didn't take delivery.

We had them remove all the shackles, bolts etc, and put in a wet bolt kit, and flip the axle . It was surprising the leaf springs were under the axle instead of on top.
