Chewed tire surface

We have a Raptor with about 15K miles on it. The front tire on each side seems to have the appearance of "chewing" in the tread. I am guessing this is from backing up as I would think the front tire gets the most abrasion. Anyone else have this issue. How dangerous is it. The tread is not separating from the tire and the tires all look good, just a rough chewed surface.

It may indicate that the tires needs alignment. The tire weights may have been bounced off as well...

I went thru my tires on one side rather quick and on inspection I noticed the weight were popped off. I blame my multiple trips down I59 in Northern ALA that season. I replaced all my trailer tires at the same time and had them balanced and aligned - all has been great tire wear wise ever since then...

  • Without pics and more info this is hard to answer. Possible you have a 6 inch lifted truck and the trailer frame is not towed level to pavement? Perhaps this axle is the only one with working brakes? Lots of things to consider.

If it were me - I would be ready to replace tires that were not perfect on my camper so I would drop by the RV dealership on my way to the tire store since I am hitched up and pulling. Just ask the service writer to take a free look and see if he had any ideas. He sees this stuff every day so maybe he can find problem fast and easy by looking at spring hangers and such right in the driveway and not have to leave camper. Then I would be off to the tire store where they also see this stuff every day. By this time you may have an answer and be ready to make repairs as needed.

I guess what I am saying is take your rig to some professionals and see what they think. Maybe you already have some ideas to check-out??

I am still trying to see in my head what "chewed" tires look like?????
  • I appreciate the responses. Old Biscuit, it doesn't look like any of those wear chart picks. Mowdoc, I understand the difficulting in trying to picture it because it is difficult to describe. The trailer was just inspected which is required in NH and the tires passed. Also, I had the brakes checked and bearing greased so they had a good look at the wheels/tires. It happens on the front tire on each side and the second and third tires do not show the same damage. The best description I can give is that it looks to me like what might happen to the surface from backing up when the tire is not turning but really just being scraped on the pavement. It is only the first tire on each side, I see no other indication of wear or damage and I am meticulous about air pressure.
  • Then the unusual tire wear is probably from backing/turning on that triple axle.

Lots of torque/pressure/scrubbing applied on those tires when maneuvering....it's not like they are sliding on ice.

Just keep an eye on them.

    Good luck!
