I know a guy that runs his own transport company. He won't move anything for less than $3 a mile...and he's very busy.
At $1.50 a mile the Gov gets roughly 30%, insurance for these guys is expensive, when I looked into it quotes were around $1000/month. So after taxes, insurance and fuel, there is not much left for the driver...long distance hauls at $1.50 a mile would not make sense...
You could probably find a used 3/4 ton or 1 ton truck and just pull it yourself.
