Cougar Lite Furnace Upgrade

I purchased a 2013 Keystone Cougar lite and I am unhappy with the amount of heat coming from the vents. I am upgrading the furnace to a 40,000 BTU model. I asked the dealer to drop the belly pan and re-route some of the 3" heat tubes. For the bathroom and bedroom, the tech suggested dropping the tubing size down to 1 1/2"D, to avoid the slide. He thought we could drop around 40' of excess 3" tubing, by going to the smaller size. To balance the air flow in the living room and back bunk, we will use adjustable vents. Any advice?

  • Not a bad deal versus trading it in already!!

This is a common issue across many brands, they just half-butt the sealing of duct work, puncture the flex-ducts, leave excessive lengths of duct work, and so on. I've had similar issues with the AC ducts.
  • I got my Cougar Lite back this week, with the new 42k BTU furnace; Big difference in air flow. I had the dealer pull all of the ducting, shorten it where possible, and tape all connections. Fired it up this morning 40°f to 65° took 40 minutes. It should keep the trailer warm, in the mountians, even though it was not designed to do so. Still a little pissed at Keystone, for not engineering a better method of ducting. The furnace, labour and taxes came to $1800.00
  • I still think that the devil is in the details here. I.e. there are disconnected/leaking/poorly routed ducts under the floor. Even my first 28' Four Winds/Dutchman travel trailer (also not a "polar" model") would easily run you out of the vehicle in the space of 30 minutes (even in the coldes weather). 35K BTU is really a lot of heating capacity provided that the ductwork is up to snuff. Hope everything works out, Redward!
  • My cougar 30 RKS will heat me out of it even into the low 20F range.
  • I'm having the same issue with my new Sandpiper 365SAQ. I just bought it and was testing out the furnace. At 30 degrees it won't heat up past 60 degrees. When I called Forest River they said yep thats normal. It has a 35k heater with 4 vents in a 42' trailer with 9' ceilings and 4 slides. I bought a Mr heater Big Buddy and it helps a bunch.
  • Owning the trailer for less than 24 hours: trading it wasn't an option, at least not yet:LOL Up here, we have 6 months of winter, 6 weeks of cool spring, another 6 weeks of cool fall, leaving only 3 months of summer: LOL In the Rockies, it can get close to freezing at night, even in July. This is a Cougar Lite, not a 0°f rated Cougar. I like the floor plan, the fit/finish and all of the standard options. There was not enough flow from any vent: IMHO, Even though I got the standard reply " this is within factory specs" I am lucky to have a good dealer, who if I was willing to pay, if Keystone didn't, help me with this issue. I am going to put a larger 40K furnace in, shorten and tighten up existing 3" vent tubes, tape all possible leaking points. We will see if this "smoke us out" or at the very least, keeps ua at room temp, even at 32°f-0°c; Thanks for the replies.
  • Strange. I have never owned a TT or fifth wheel wherein the stock furnace wasn't capable of running us out of the place. Including the Cougar fifth wheel in my signature. You sure something else isn't wrong? E.g disconnected ductwork...
  • Be careful, the furnace needs to have enough air flow to keep from over heating and cycling on and off on the high limit.
