Cougar rear bike rack

Are there some of you that have set bikes on the rear cargo rack of a cougar 5th wheel? I would be nice to know of how you have done this, as all they have on the carrier is one straight pole. Any ideas on this would be great. I don't really just want to strap the bikes to the pole and have them jumping up and down and flopping around.

Thank you
  • I have used it several times! Strapped 2 adult bikes and 2 kids bikes. Did have to use a few ratchet straps for piece of mind and its a bit of a jigsaw puzzle but it will work. I did lose a spare tire cover that drug off apparently when hitting a low spot. Didn't know it till we got to the destination.
  • We have used ours a few times to carry two bikes. We used a lot of bunge cords. We strapped the bikes together at the wheels and frame to minimize movement and strapped them to the post and slide frame. For security we ran a bike cable through the bikes, wheels and the 5ers spare tire and slide frame. A bit of a bother but it worked well.
  • We also have the pull out carrier on our Cougar 327RES and have yet to use it. (which reminds me I need to lubricate it before it rust in the closed position)
It is weight rated with a warning that you need to deduct the spare tire assembly weight from the rating, which will not leave much weight capacity.
My concern would be the extra overhang reducing clearance when coming in and out of various entrances plus the added tail swing. Just something else to monitor.
I would recommend adding additional bike rack hardware should you want to use it for that purpose, but then you would likely compromise the slide in/out function.
In our case I can only see it's use as being as an added outdoor off the ground storage areas when parked i.e. chairs, BBQ etc.
Not sure the added weight is worth the utilitarian gain.
    Enjoy GPG
  • If you are talking about the fold down rack that has the diamond mesh bottom you can purchase some bike racks that resemble smaller motorcyle wheel chocks that bolt to the rack. The bicyle tires sit inside these mounts to steady them and a strap keeps them in place. We bought ours at CW, made by Stromberg if I recall correctly. They worked pretty good, we would just have check the tightness of the strap during stops.
  • I have one on my 293SAB and have never used it. The kids' bikes go on their bunks and ours go in the living room or in the truck bed. My concern is with the spare hanging off the end of it. When I pull the rack out, it seems pretty floppy so I never have used it.
