Because it wont tow properly. A certain percentage of trailer weight (typically 15-20%) needs to be on the pin to tow straight and true.
Seeing as how you are limited on payload with the 1/2 ton I would seriously look at the new Aluminum version of the Andersen Ultimate 5er hitch. It will get you back a couple hundred pounds of payload vs some other hitches.
Is it helium filled? My hitchs wieghs in at around 200#, so you aren't going to drop a couple hundred pounds by going aluminim.
Far better to take the extra money from an aluminum hitch and just buy the right truck.
Let's try a different tack: OP, why are you so insistent on a 1/2 ton truck? A 3/4 ton doesn't cost much more and gives you a much better towing machine.
OK if you want to get technical 200lb vs 30lb for the Andersen is a 170lb diff. Happy???
