This is what I did. From JoAnn Fabrics or a like store, obtain several metal bobbins. I replaced all of my spools with the bobbins, using the same screw. You can re-thread the string around the bobbin and it won't break again. I don't know why the mfgrs didn't do this in the first place.
I don't remember if I had to put a washer on the front of the bobbin or not. If you need to, just buy some small washers and you should be good to go!
You should be able to get the string back through the hole in the bottom piece without a lot of problem if you don't raise/lower the blind. (This causes the string to move inside the blind) The first time this happened to me I was on the road in WA and I had a blind place fix it. I watched how they did it and then fixed the rest myself. It really wasn't hard. Particularly if you just have to change the spool with the string still around it.
