Debris in Fresh Water Tank

This is my first 5th wheel and I am preparing to winterize the rig. The rig is a 33 foot, 2007 KZ Durango. My first time to drain the fresh water tank and the petcock slowed to a trickle rather fast in my opinion. The indicator showed 3/4 full. I blasted some compressed air up the drain tube and heard a gurgle, then the flow returned to full speed. It is obvious there is some debris in the tank. Is this normal? Any thoughts on how to remove the debris? Thanks in advance..... :)

As mentioned probably trash from the builder cutting the holes in the tank for fittings, should not be a problem except maybe when draining it could happen again. But how often do you drain the tank, once a year. I would not worry about it. :)

    Thanks....

  • The tank vent is right next to the fill tube. I did remove the cover from the fill tube when draining. Not sure if I had to do this , but thought it would help with venting the tank......
  • Well, I went out and checked the flow and it has quit. I checked the indicator and it shows the tank is now empty. I hit the tube with another short blast of compressed air, no gurgle and no more water coming out. Always interesting doing things for the first time, thanks again for the replies......
  • Not normal to have debris in water tank. When draining there needs to be a vent no different than pouring gas out of a canister.. How is your water tank vented?

  • Quite possibly the plastic cut out from when the drilled the hole in the tank to install the plumbing, i.e., the inlet or the pickup for the water pump. The guys who do that job both for fresh water and waste water holding tanks use hole saws and tend to just let the cut-out fall into the tank. I had the black water tank valve refuse to close on my 2007 TT a couple months ago, and when I investigated, wedged in the valve was the cut-out.

Unless it happens to get in the line, as evidently yours did, it'll clog things up, so I dunno why they can't be bothered pulling it out while it's easy to do. Odds are that it'll be years before it afflicts you again.

That's the most likely cause of your problem, and it that was indeed it, it's otherwise as inert as the tank material itself. There is, of course, the possibility it is something else nasty. But not very likely that.
