Diesel engine - Chevrolet Duramax?

We found a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado and other C/K3500 4x4 Crew Cab that has a brand new Duramax 6.6 or 6.5 engine in it. Dealer was not sure...we will have to go look at it.

How are these engines? And is this truck good for hauling 15K 5er?

Carfax report stated, "axles checked." And 8 months later, all tires were replaced. Can this mean that there might have been problems with the axles?

Thanks for your help in advance!
  • It's only as good as the condition it's in. The Chevy Duramax is a proven platform. New engine? Axles checked? Getting rid of a truck after buying tires? Raises too many flags for me already.

There are plenty of diesel trucks to pick from and any recent 1-ton will do. Doesn't require overthinking it honestly. About the only thing I would avoid is a 6.0 Ford. Older or newer Fords are fine. Chevy Duramax's are fine in about every year as are the Ram with the Cummins engines. Some years of the ram are more desirable than others but all are capable.

When you have a candidate take it to a mechanic for a pre-purchase inspection. An Internet forum is not going to spot any issues with an individual vehicle. No number of threads will offset an hour with a good diesel mechanic.
  • I am assuming that you meant the TV section on THIS forum? I just found it and posted there.
  • You will have more and/or better "informed' replies and info if you post your question on the Tow Vehicle forum (here) or for the best ("informed") go to one of the dedicated Chev/GMC diesel forums like -

    Diesel Place (Chev/GMC)

Of course there are also brand specific forums for Ram (Dodge) & Ford.
