Disc brake temps

I picked up Redwood today after having the Morryde iS and discs installed, what a nice ride!!!
I do have a question, the wheels has a ton of brake dust when i picked it up from the dealer ( 600 miles from Elkhart )..

On my 159 mile trip home, i took some temperature readings and they were ALL about the same with not 1 being any hotter..
Rotors- 170-190
Calipers- 200-220

What say you??

  • Just for clarification . . .

The brakes were installed at Morryde last week, I did send a note to Gary Wheeler and Brian Hoseniski on Saturday asking them...

I believe that they told me that they use Kodiak brake systems and I just assumed thy used semi metallic ...

Gary at Morryde just responded back...
"Joe, the temps are running a little higher than I would like but not to the point of being concerned"

He also stated that they use Ceramic pads as standard

QUALITY semi metallic are the way to go!!!

    What brand do you like?

I am examining Wagner SX215 pads for when I need to replace them on the 5ver.

I always thought the OEM pads on my Ram were excellent other than the dust, but the new pads, which are Raybestos made specifically for heavy trucks/towing, are really exceptional.

What Raybestos model / part number pads did you select?

The brake dust is probably from semi-metallic pads which usually give the best braking results. Some change to ceramic pads, which are reported to produce less dust. The negative to ceramic pads is that they do not produce as much braking force, so no free lunch with changing to them.

I've hated the dust on my brakes since my truck was new. Recently I replaced my front brakes and the new ones hardly dust at all! What I learned in the process is that not all semi-metallic pads are created equal. I was unwilling to switch to ceramic due to what you said, they don't stop as well. The new brakes are glorious. I always thought the OEM pads on my Ram were excellent other than the dust, but the new pads, which are Raybestos made specifically for heavy trucks/towing, are really exceptional.
  • FYI...the pads that came with my Titan Brake kit (6,000 lb axle)...were pretty soft...maybe organic? ...not sure...but they didn't last long. Just changed to semi-metallic....we'll see how they work.

  • I recently checked mine. Those temps sound about right. Mine are Dexter and I have 17.5 wheels.
In the 5 years I have had my rig, I will say that I think the brake dust may have deteriorated the clear coat on my wheels. I can't say for sure but I don't know what else would have done it as I don't use wheel cleaners on them.
Enjoy your new disc and IS system. Safe travels.
