- Big_KatunaExplorer IIOur rooftop is basically worthless as we prefer state parks with shade.
I chose a Winegard Pathway X2 carryout as it can find either DISH eastern or western arc which gives you more options to avoid tree interference.. - goducks10ExplorerWinegard Pathway X2 user. Got the DishPointer Pro app for my phone. Being in the PNW we gots lots of trees. With the DishPointer Pro app I can thread the sats signal through trees.
- BB_TXNomadPortable, as we like trees. Often have to move the antenna around to find that one hole thru the tree canopy.
- Super_DaveExplorerI use DirecTV so it's always the dish on a tripod. For the times that I'm not by trees, I wish I could secure it to the roof.
- ljrNomadI have a Winegard Trav’lr. For many years prior I had a portable on a tripod. If I had it to do over I’d stick with the portable. I’ve encountered many that have a lot of trouble with a manually aimed dish. It’s usually (always) because they went cheap on equipment and didn’t do their homework.
- lee_worsdellExplorerdish network even works in Ontario Canada for me. Can only use 25ft cable or it wont pick up all the stations. many times we have been down south with friends that have the roof mount and they cant get anything, just pull ours out and find and opening.
- missnmountainsExplorerThe winegard Travlr receives HD from Directv. We have only lost signal a couple of times in very dense trees.
Ken - topjimmyExplorerYep no doubt living up north we use a High Quality Quad wrap 25ft cable most of the time as it does help with getting a better signal, 50 ft +all the cable in the 5er is a LONG way for the signal to go the 50 ft Coax Dish gives ya for the Tailgater is Cheap stuff

You can do both. Sure is nice to open door and hit the on button for the roof top sat and go about your business. WELL worth the $$$.
You get really good at eye balling the site to determine if the roof top dish will work. - Cummins12V98Explorer IIIFor the times it does not work no biggie to us as we always have MANY hours of programming in the DVR. Then when we have the signal we stream the shows we missed.
NOT worth setting up the portable Dish especially the one that is trying to hit three satellites and HD.
