While I agree with your premise if you are going to be gone for hours or all day the original poster asked: If you are parked behind Walmart for the night, and you have to run out for something, like a fast food dinner run or quick apt, do you take your Fifth Wheel with you, or do you leave it behind Walmart and take your truck, and then come back to it? and I personally see nothing wrong with this and will continue to do so when the occasion calls for it. Walmart is not a place to unhitch and leave your rig. That is the kind of situation that discourages Walmart managers not to permit RV parking. Walmart is providing an accomadation to promote good will and of course business. It is certainly not neighborly to leave a rig that cannot be moved if needed.
Its intended to be a temporary privilege it is not a campground.
Agreed, If you must drop your trailer find a paid site vs. leaving it unattended in a public lot.
It is a classic One bad apple scenario.

AS this practice continues Wal Mart will discontinue its policy of allowing parking. We slowly see more and more Wal Marts that don't allow over night parking now.
It is the abuse and campers poor judgement that will ruin it for everyone.
Why should Wal Mart assume liability for your RV while you are gone?
In many cases, it's NOT Wal-Mart's choice; it may be lease restrictions or city ordinances. If there's an ordinance cited on the "No overnight parking" sign, you know where the restriction came from.
