I think it really depends on you location and orientation to storm winds,which often come from the opposite direction of prevailing winds.
We have camped in 32 sates and leave our awning out, tied down, tilted for heavy rain and with de-flappers 99.9 % of the time.
Of course we had to put it up, in the middle of the night, in the rain, a few times.
The other item is location within the park. I campground host 7 months a year in a COE campground and three awnings have been lost there. Always in the same exact site! One per year.
