WE compromise, at night, I will leave about 18" out - just enough to cover the stairs....now, I am a very light sleeper, so if I hear wind, I bring it in....and I have a few times.
In the day, when we go away, sometimes it comes in depending how far away and how long we'll be gone, sometimes I'll bring it in about 2/3s....
