do you leave your awnings out?

Morning Folks! My wife and I enjoy getting out in our Cameo as often as we can. However, since we live in the DFW area I find myself a bit timid to leave my awnings out overnight. My main concern is that some unknown storm will come rolling through and rip these beautiful Carefree awnings right of the rig. However, I see many of my neighbors that leave their awnings out even in the rain - assuming there is no expectation for high winds.

What do you do? It would be nice to put them out, string some lights (which we have never done in 4 years) and not worry about it.

Thanks for the feedabck.
Tom

  • I think it really depends on you location and orientation to storm winds, which often come from the opposite direction of prevailing winds.

We have camped in 32 sates and leave our awning out, tied down, tilted for heavy rain and with de-flappers 99.9 % of the time.

Of course we had to put it up, in the middle of the night, in the rain, a few times.

The other item is location within the park. I campground host 7 months a year in a COE campground and three awnings have been lost there. Always in the same exact site! One per year.
  • When the wind starts blowing the awning goes up...

When we leave the site or RV park the awning goes up...

When we go to bed the awning goes up...
  • I never leave the awning out when we leave or go to bed. I have got out of bed and went out in the rain too many times to put the awning up. Never again.
  • I have a power awning, easy enough to release the tie-downs and hit the button to roll it up at night (or when away for extended periods). I've seen and heard too many stories about damage to awnings from unexpected winds kick up.
