Yes I agree. I have a combination of a SRW one ton and a trailer that is within the limits but there are many combinations that are over the limit. Once you get a dually and a large 5th wheel or toy hauler a class A is required. Like you I'm worried about liability should something happen especially travelling all over the US and Canada.
A few years ago I obtained a Record of Training certificate through ORVDA.
Link I carry this card with me should I be involved in an accident or stopped by police. It's proof that I'm legal in my home province. My next 5th wheel will likely be a little smaller so I will have no problem staying under 11,000 kg.
