FWIW....
As both Phil and I live in CA - and Fred Did/Does as well, it's a nightmare. Last year, Phil and I traded emails and he sent me some of his pictures. I then went into the CHP office (not a commercial office) and was told I COULD use a Class A non commercial license because of the weight limitations.
So, I went into the DMV and after discussing what I was going to make for dinner and asked her how her day was, I got an earful that the CHP office was incorrect.
Long story short, I went to the Conejo Grade CHP office, showed the officer the Pics from Phil - and explained I hadn't done anything. He then lifted his Kimono, and told me that I would get a ticket, because you do have to have doubles with triples endorsement - and the secondary trailer has to have it's own brake system either separate (like a boat) or tied into the primary trailer's braking system.
Sigh... All I wanted was to put my two dirt bikes on the back of my 5er and a second small trailer is all I wanted. NOT
So, I had a rack welded to the frame of my 5er and can put almost a 1000 lbs on it (if I wanted) and not need to worry about it.
Kudos to Fred for knowing the law as well as he does. CA makes it a frigging nightmare.
Oh and for those of you who are endorsed in CA, they WILL SITE YOU If you don't present your truck log at the time they ask for license, registration and proof of insurance. They specifically don't ask for it just to "get you"... I was told that by two commercial truck drivers when I was going to take my Class A license originally.
