The Butch services latch is a nice economical alternative to the Blue OX.However you have to remember to use it! You must insert the pin for it to work. The blue Ox is 100% fool proof. The Blue OX will work at all times. It eliminates operator error which is generally the root cause of most drops.
The Butch Services latch needs the operator input to be hitched properly properly, which is generally this problem in the first place
^^^ this. The diferrence between the two is that one is always enabled (Blue Ox) and the other is only enabled if you remember to use it (Butch's).
I would say a majority of fifth wheel drops that I've read about are human error and forgetting a step - I don't see how anything but the Blue Ox actually offers any real protection. If you can forget to close the handle, or put the pin in, you can just as easily forget the step of enabling the Butch's catcher.
My insurance is Farmers. It is less expensive than any of the sky is falling Bed Savers.
$100 comprehensive and rates don't go up.
Insurance is a separate issue.
We all have insurance. However I don't want to damage my truck or trailer by having a mishap that I can avoid.
I don't believe a bedsaver is a must have item, but I do believe they are an effective item, that can prevent me from making a costly mistake.
Insurance can pay for the repairs but it won't save me from the hassle and inconvenience of taking RV and truck to the shop and being without both for weeks.
There are pros and cons to the bedsavers, however I don't think insurance is part of the discussion.
