but in theory doesn't the addition of the third axle mean that the RV weight is much greater requiring the support and thus maintenance should be at about the same time.

No I theory it means it is capable of carrying more weight,vs needing the 3rd axle to support its own weight.
Typically the triple axle units will have a higher CCC. To your point they will also have a heavier dry weight but the axle is more about carrying more cargo.
