Dually vs Straight

I've been called the "Weight Police", and flamed so many times for preaching to others to stay within their trucks GVWR, that I can't remember when it started. BUT, almost all anymore use their trucks RAWR...Now I don't, but we're not talking a very heavy 5er here, with a GVW of only 14,400#, and a possible pin weight up to maybe 2900-3000# and that's if 5er is loaded to it's max GVW, (I've never loaded a TT or a 5er to it's max GVW). A Dually, in my mind would allow for a more stable towing experience, especially if one is towing on roads that are mountainous and curvy, but the OP's 5er IS NOT that heavy.

Any of the Big 3's newer 1 ton 3500 SRW trucks should be able to tow the OP's 5er. and be within recommended specs. Might exceed GVWR some, but not RAWR.

It goes beyond tire capacity, not to mention truck.

Interesting... you may want to read up on specs BEFORE you start bashing. The stock tires on my 2013 F350 are rated at 3750# EACH!! That's 7500# for both.. BTW the 250/350 or 2500/3500 does not mean anything any longer as it relates to capacity.

Well said, I too will never ever own a dually . Don't need one etc etc etc. My SRW does the job. Does the op need one for his current fifth wheel, without knowing his weights don't know . I will let the dually experts with their fear factor, and emotion's tell him what he needs to do.

There are 1 ton SRW trucks out there now, Ford GM/Chevy or Dodge that CAN tow the 5er you're talking about. I'm talking 2013-2015 1 ton SRW trucks, but yes, they can tow that weight and not exceed the trucks RAWR...

I was a BIG stickler of GVWR, but over the years have found out more and more, that most use RAWR...Now, with my truck and load, I'm even under my trucks GVWR of 14,000# and WELL under it's 9750# RAWR (actually rated to 11,800#)...BUT, yes, there are 1 ton SRW trucks out there today that can handle weight you are talking about...do the research.

I was talking about a 1 ton 3500 SRW truck, not a 2500...The weights they can tow and payload they can carry now have gone up quite a bit in the last couple of years...Don't know that much about the 2500, but was talking about a 1 ton SRW truck.

. Ah, 3500, F350's, SRW trucks may have payloads up to 3800 lbs or so depending on actual truck and options. I had a 2012 F350, SRW King Ranch and payload per door post was 3460, so I was overloaded. I ordered truck and assumed the catalog specs were correct - Big mistake by 600 lbs. I bit the bullet a year later and got the DRW for piece of mind. No regrets and now have some extra capacity.

I am unsure of your question about DEF in the 2015 Chev's. You say you have a 2011 and they use DEF...I have one. It was the first year using DEF for Chevrolet. As far a dually, I would never go back to a single wheel truck pulling large fifth wheels. I had a blowout on our 2003 chev duramax pulling a 34 ft Alpenlite and it was a bit squirrely. Lots of weight on those back two tires. I have noticed that the tires on our 2011 dually have lasted quite a bit longer than when pulling with a single wheel pickup. The stability makes trips with winding roads a lot more stress free. Best of luck...

Problem solved, we traded yesterday for a Class C motorhome. I agree that a SRW is just not enough for our heavy Fiver. That is the decision that we came to in 2002 when we bought the first DRW. I was trying to combine trucks into a commuter and tow machine with the SRW but I knew down inside that was not the right decision. Thank you all for your very insightful comments. This trade also eliminates the potential DEF problems associated with the 2011 and beyond diesels. A special thanks goes out to Obama Motors and the EPA!
