Thanks, but he's still vague about the actual differences. Making it "easier to drive" could refer to spring rate, I guess.
I also just found this chart, which narrows the gap when comparing 5th wheel to 5th wheel capacity, rather than conventional vs 5th, and notes how final drive affects capacity.

The taller final drive in the GM could add to the "easier to drive" category, as the engine would be turning lower rooms on the hiway, all other things equal...
