Yeah, probably broken or missing pin. Sounded at first like just the equalizing shaft between the two sides, but with it crashing to the bottom makes me think the gear has come loose on at least one leg. You'll have to get into it to find the problem. Hopefully just the equalizer pin because that one is simple to get to. It is actually just a bolt through the shaft.
I believe my Cougar has an Atwood landing gear. Probably not this exact one, but they are all pretty similar to what is shown in this document. Exploded view and parts list near the bottom. Check your owners manual too, because you should have got a manual like this with the trailer.
