It could have a relay, that seems to be the preferred wiring method but I don't think most manufacturers use it. Unless you can get a wiring diagram, or call the manufacturer, I guess you may have to trace the wiring. Have you pulled the switch off the wall and looked at the contacts? We had one with burnt contacts we also had one with a bad motor that was intermittent like yours. Sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't. We replaced the motor (easy to do-$250) and it now works all the time.
