Sounds terrible but I did it every year for 13 years and it always worked great afterwards.
That is exactly why I replaced my Dometic 15,00btu air conditioner a couple of years ago with a new Atwood Air Command unit.
I really got tired of climbing up on the roof and going through that routine every time the air conditioner was not used for a couple of months.
OP, I wonder if perhaps you had a visit with a few mice while the unit was in storage.
