electrical power

I have a fifth wheel trailer that when plugged into my truck has power but when hooked up to 30 or 50 amp service has no power. I checked all cb's can't find anything popped. very frustrating can anybody give me any ideas? Thank You

Even before the converter, is the switch when it gets shore power working? Some of them give a very audible 'clunk' when you put the 120V AC to them.
  • thank for the replies will start trouble shooting this weekend. thanks again Todd
  • On my rusty old automate if the kitchen GFCI is tripped there is no power to my converter and if the battereis are down, no 12 volt to the lights. Try looking for you wall plugs that have the GFCI built in to them and reset.

    Just my $0.02
  • NOT all ceiling lights are 12 volt, ours are 120 shore power, so the suggested test may not reveal anything. I would however check to make sure your battery disconnect switch, found near the battery, has not accidentally been turned off.
  • Sounds like convereter either popped its breaker or blew the 12v fuses for charging the battery. Also if you have no 12v power when plugged in, it sounds like your battery is toast.

I'll second that. First test, disconnect truck and shore power and the battery positive lead. Then slap a volt meter on the battery. My guess is dead as the proverbial door nail.

Second test, plug into shore power. Then have a look at voltmeter across the wires at the still disconnected battery. My guess is, still dead as a door nail. But it is possible that the battery is so dead that it sucks up all the converter can put out, so that the voltage across the converter drops too low to power things. The second test, with no battery will tell you whether you have to replace both converter and battery, or just battery.

When you say has power you are referring to the ceiling lights I guess. The ceiling lights are powered by your 12VDC Power Distribution Panel. The Power distribution panel is fed by BOTH the on-board converter/charger unit when plugged into shore power and the on-board 12VDC trailer battery.

This is a simplified 30AMP Electrical Scheme that might help look for things...

Circuit breakers only control 120VAC items. ATC Fuses controls the 12VDC items. The trailer running and stop/signal lights is only powered by the truck lights system.

Tell us about the ceiling lights inside the trailer only.

I would look for in-line fuse close to your battery terminals or perhaps maybe a BATTERY Disconnect switch that may be in the wrong position.

When you connect to your truck you are connecting to 12VDC only. When connecting to 120VAC SHORE Power your on-board converter/charger provides 12VDC to your 12VDC Power Distribution panel which operates your ceiling 12VDC lights. It could be your trailer 12VDC battery is completely run down dead...

If you have recently disconnected your batteries you may have connected them back up in REVERSE ORDER which is very easy to do and some 12VDC ATC fuss may now be blown in your 12VDC Power Distribution Panel. Especially look for TWO that are labeled REVERSE POLARITY
