All my fans work off a button and all of them have rain sensors. I installed the covers, Max-air, designed to work with these vents ( no drill, just pop the little tabs out ) so I could leave them ope...

Personally, in that situation I would disengage the tstat and just raise it manually. Nothing gained by using the automatic, and it's working against the "automatic" part of the equation. Might not harm it, but why take the chance? But that's just me...
