Fifth Wheel and 2500 Chevy Truck

I have a 2015 Chevy crew cab 2500 gas engine with a payload of 2700lbs. I was thinking about getting a fifth wheel to replace our current TT and was surprised how quickly i maxed out.
600 lbs worth of people and gear in the truck plus 200lbs for the hitch leaves me about 1900 lbs left for pin weight.
I'm looking at something in the 32-33 foot range and have found pin weights to be about 18%-19% of trailer weight in the "ultra lite" fifth wheels. so my questions are:
1) Does my math seem correct?
2) If i get a trailer fully loaded weighing around 9500 lbs am i going to regret it as far as towing goes?
3) Anything else i should be on the lookout for?
  • IMO, you would be good to go, with a FW actual loaded weight of 10,000 lbs. In many cases, late model 2500/250 trucks are more capable, but show lower payload, due to the restricted GVWR.

If you're over, but close, on your total payload, but under on your RAWR and, especially, =tires=, I wouldn't worry too much about it. So much of the 2500 and 3500 are the same, that it's more a matter of labeling than of actual capacity. Look at the Jayco Eagle HT and KZ Durango 1500 lines for some light-weight "half ton" (no, they're not really) FWs. The Eagle HTs come in with a GVW of 9950 and the Durango 1500s at 10,500. They are the top 2 on my short list to replace my older, and heavier, Komfort.

  • you are considering payload which is the right way to start off thinking.

You are on the right track. I am sure there will be lots weight police showing up in this thread.

for what its worth - although I have a diesel engine im pulling a 32 foot 5th with my 2500 chevy that comes in around 13,000. I am over my payload by about 15% but under in almost all other numbers. Truck does amazing. Absolute joy to tow with.
