The hitch wasn't a Reese.
However a hitch as any mechanical devise needs to be checked for worn out of tolerance or broken parts. How often depends on how anal the operator is.
Commercial vehicles have a annual safety inspection program for the truck and trailer. The hitch is included in that program so I still do my own safety inspection at least once a year.
