Behind the axle 2.5" will mean each time the truck hits a bump in the road, and the weight of the hitch comes down a bit more on the pickup bed, then the front wheels will have less weight on them momentarily. Also you will have more instability.
If the hitch is mounted in front of the rear axle, then that momentary weight will push down mainly on the rear axle, but some of the weight (about 8%) will also go ONTO the front axle, so it will not cause in-stability.
Have it changed.
