Thanks Diesel Truck Driver- We will do the visual too! All good ideas.
Yeah, it sucks to do this. Each time was over $4000. in damage. Interesting that no damage to the 5er. Grateful for that and that we had good insurance co. that didn't question us. They just said get it checked before we use it again. And I can't discount operator error. Sometimes we don't see what we think we see. The visual is a way to slow down and check.
What was embarrassing was that we were just talking with people next to us with a new (first time) travel trailer who were concerned about all the things that can go wrong if you make a mistake. (Which we all know right?) And then I pulled out with them watching!
But we are headed to the Rockies this summer again. Looking forward to a nice full season of RVing!

Just an FYI to DieselTruckDriver, the reason I do a pull test before any extra weight is place on the 5er, is IF high Hitch, it is much easier to pull free if 90percent plus of the weight is still on the LG.
If your wheels are well chocked LIKE THEY SHOULD be, there is no strain on the landing gear.
And again I state.
No matter the hitch a pull test is a Must!! Ask Kennethwooster
