Fifth Wheel hitch security

I am a newbie on fifth wheels and have a question about hitch security in your truck. Does anyone try to lock the hitch in the truck? I see all the pins that hold the hitch in the bed and wondered if anyone has had problems or how do you secure it to the truck? Maybe I just don't trust people but it has me worried.
Thanks,
Curly

  • I replaced one of the rail pins with a locking one from Camping World. Be pretty tough to cut it on the bottom of the bed. You could still steal the top part of the hitch, but I don't know what you'd do with it. :)
  • If someone single handed lifts my hitch out of my truck, and takes off running with it, I am not going to get in this guy's way. If left in the bed of my truck in an non-secure area, any random man and wife could get it out with ease. They could also steal everything in my truck, destroy it, and set it on fire if I am not watching. Really not being sarcastic people don't care about stealing or destroying other peoples property, lock your hitch so it can't be opened while towing. Watch your property at all times if you can, if not keep your fingers crossed.
  • Thanks for the help. I appreciate your input. Happy camping to all!!!
I am sure I will have more questions on the fiver.

  • I would think that criminals would be just as apt to steel your wheels as your hitch. would take about the same amount of time and be a lot easier to sell. Those are the type of things you have insurance for.

People worry more about someone pulling the release handle and those are commonly locked.

X-2 - you need to double check the release handle whenever you are towing and are away from the rig, especially rest stops, fuel stations, w/m, whatever. Thee are many more pranksters out there than someone willing to remove and lift a 200-lb hitch.
  • I have a locking rollup tonneau cover that fits over top (retrax).
  • I think that unless you leave your vehicle unattended in a storage lot, you likely will be OK. I do however have locks on all areas of my hitch that are pinned. Most of the locks could be easily cut or broken open but it would make hitch removal more difficult.
  • Curly2001,
You have four securing pins on the “feet” of your 5er hitch. I just drilled out the hole in one of the pins to accept a case hardened padlock. This method works fine for me. Camping World has factory made locks to secure your hitch if this “drilling” method does not work for you. Lakeside
  • The pins are secure for towing. I do not have mine locked. The only reason for locking them is to try to prevent theft of the hitch. But locks can be cut easily unless you have another way in mind?
