Fifth Wheel Propane Tank Mounting Straps Broken

On my 18 month old FW, the top propane strap has broken, and the bottom one has a hair line crack. This looks like metal fatigue. So I have two questions:

1. Does anyone know where I can purchase replacement straps? My search was unsuccessful.
2. Have any of you FW owners found a better way to secure the tanks? I'd appreciate your suggestions.

Thanks,

Jim
  • I received the picture from Donn0128, and it is for a double tank mount with the threaded rod coming up between the tanks. That is typical for what you'd find mounted on the hitch of a TT. These are single 30# tanks in FW cabinets, so you still need to have access to get the tank in and out without hardware getting in the way.
  • Helimech - Thanks much - that sure looks like it. I'll go take a measurement to be sure. In the mean time, I'm very interested in modifying the mounting as the folks mention above. These straps are a very cheap way of doing things.
  • Hello Jim,

Is this what you are looking for?

  • 3/8-16 threded rod, measure to length. 3/8-16 hex nuts, qty 2. 3/8-16 wing nut. Drill a 3/8 diameter hole in the tank mounting plate. Thread on one hex nut push rod through the drilled hole and secure with second hex nut. For the tank top brace a piece of 1-1/2 inch angle will do the trick. Drill a hole in the middle, and cut a couple of notches on the opposite edge to slip into the tank handle. Tighten with the wind nut. If you want, send me a pm with your email address, will be glad to send you a picture.
  • Donn0128 or Shadows4. Any chance one of you could post a photo so I could clone it? Thanks much.
  • Mine is as Don describes. Maybe you could use some nylon straps instead? Good luck.
  • Mine uses a clamp, large threaded rod and wing nut to hold them in place. 10 years with no problems. Maybe its time to fix it correctly.
