Fifth wheel slider

I have the Reese 16K manual slider. My problem is that the slider will not slide back when hooked up to the RV. It will slide easily when not hooked up. The service manager of my dealer says that Reese recommends dropping the landing gear and take some weight off the hitch (my pin weight is a little over 2K pounds) when want it to slide to the maneuvering position. It seams like a lot of hassle to have to do this every time I want to use the hitch slide. Has anyone else had to do this?

  • Another possibility. The locking pins are like the sharp end of a pic-ax (semi-sharp to blunt). You can see them in the Figure 12 also inside the legs of the slider.

Undo the hitch pins at the bed rails. Roll the hitch forward or backwards to expose access to the bottom of the side of both legs. Spray heavily inside this area with WD40. This will lubricate the "leaf springs" which the locking pins ride and assure when you move the handle from Tow to maneuver that the pins are properly and fully releasing.

The arm will move much more smoothly.
  • I've used the brakes and also chocked the trailer wheels. Have lots of lithium grease on the slides and wheels.
  • I can only comment to the square tube Reese slider hitches. I agree with the others - lube it.

Square tube - the rollers are just rolled steel, not ball bearings. The Slider rails are also just steel. I think the rails and/or the rollers can get flat spots on them and make rolling difficult. I also believe you have to be a little aggressive (not destructive) with these heavy duty hitches to make them work correctly.

    Lube the slide bars
Lube the outside of the rollers - they may slide instead of roll
Lube the inside of the rollers if they do roll

If there are indentations in the rails use sandpaper to smooth out the edges of the indentation.

Look for Figure 12. This shows the side of the legs, slider bars and rollers.

  • Just a note,

the car wash would lock up my rollers. It would slide just fine over the greased rail with nothing on it, but add weight and it didn't move. Make sure the rollers are turning. If not, get some lube in them. Once and only once it took penetrating oil to get it to move after years of having a 5er that didn't need it. Once I got it working, I just kept it lubed.
  • I had the same Reese you have. I tried everything in regard to lubeing the rails and never could get it to slide back if I didn't drop the landing gear. PITA.
  • Agree - lube it up and
once released, do u lock the 5er brakes and pull forward so it will slide?

(not that I know as I got a superglide, just heard that was the way :) )

    good luck !
  • Make sure it is lubed, and lube often. Then be careful because it will work better then expected!

Use some spray lube on the rollers, slide rails and the release.

That has always been the fix for mine, but I don't want to rule out you might have other issues. You should not have to set the landing gear.
  • I have the same hitch and a couple of times in the past it would hang up on something. I read the maintenance info, and lubricated everything, and now seems to work fine.
