Yes, always. We try to strike a balance between furnace and fireplace use so that the furnace does run enough to keep the basement and holding tanks and water lines warm.

We do. You need to be careful if the outside temp is below 32. Not running the furnace will allow your underbelly (tanks and pipes down there) to cool down and possibly freeze. It is however a great alternative as a supplement to the furnace or total replacement for the furnace when outside temps are above 32.
