Folding boats

We want to bring all our toys when we snowbird. Problem is that with our MC on the back lift, out of state length & towing limits, we can't tow our at home boat as well. (20'I/O runabout)
So, its boiling down to a folding boat that we can strap on, under, somewhere to let us get out and enjoy the fishing in other states.
Whats your way and experience in carrying a folding boat on a 5er?
  • I owned a Folbot (pronounced FOLD BOAT) many years ago which I enjoyed very much, especially as a small sailboat. We took it several times to St. Andrews State Park in Florida where I could sail in the lagoon and even in the bay. It has an aluminum framework which inserts into a heavy frabric "skin". It was 17 feet long. When broken down it packed into two "golf bag size" bags--three with the sail rig.

The Folbot is similar in concept to the Klepper, not as expensive. They are still available in several sizes.
  • I have a 14' Porta Bote that I carry beneath my 5'er using ratchet straps. It's great for lakes and rivers. I power it with a 8 h.p. Nissan motor.

  • Other than porta boat there is another one made entirely of aluminum which is lighter and folds smaller you might consider. Had a Fold Boat and was never impressed. It was OK, but too heavy and too many parts that need to be stored someplace making it difficult.
  • You might try searching this Forum for Portabote and/or a Google search.
  • Porta Bote is our leaning for something to take along.
Our at home boat is a deep water heavy craft, wonderful for salmon and lake trout fishing, not suitable for shallow gulf coast waters. As much as i love fishing, my DW is even more an afficianado. She will not sit ashore. She even baits her own hook. Caught me long ago.
  • Other options…….Inflatable pontoon boat or float tube. A lot of fun for fishing.
  • Some-one in my fly fishing club has a folding boat, it is a Porta-boat, about 12 foot. You can Google it.
It works very well, is easy to transport, and I know he is happy with it.
Another way to go is an inflatable, like a Zodiac, which a few people I know use.
  • Make 2 trips? Might want to google "modular boats" and/or "modular kayak" for some options.
